Coronavirus (COVID-19) impact on World Vision operations

In support of public health recommendations outlined by the World Health Organization, some sponsorship program activities have been temporarily suspended due to COVID-19. Activities may include sponsor queries and correspondence, sponsor visits, gift notifications and gift deliveries. These temporary suspensions may affect the information you receive from us in the coming weeks and months.

In 2020, the community transitioned from sponsorship to self-sufficiency and World Vision is no longer on site. Because of the dedication and partnership of Canadians like you, local people and organizations have been equipped to continue leading the community’s development – and that is something to celebrate!

Health and Nutrition
  • 310 educators received training and 5 preschools were renovated; 86% of young children now attend preschool.
  • 2,426  caregivers were trained in positive parenting, child development, nutrition, hygiene and healthcare.
  • 5 preschools received developmental toys and furniture.
  • 5 preschools were partially renovated. 
  • Playgrounds were installed at 5 preschools, providing a safe play space for children.
  • A parenting school was established in the health clinic to provide learning opportunities for pregnant women and parents of young children in growth and development, positive parenting methods and creating a safe home environment.
  • Parents’ corners were created in 5 preschools, creating space for moms and dads to participate in monthly education sessions on children’s development and  behaviour.
  • Parents who didn’t send children to preschool were educated on the importance of early childhood education.
  • The rate of stunting in children under five decreased by 6.7%.
  • There’s been an increase of healthcare-seeking among parents—97% now take their children for urgent care when needed.
  • Collaboration between clinics, preschools and local government have been strengthened to provide better care for children.
Child Protection
  • 87% of children aged 8-18 now believe caregivers are responsive to their concerns, and 98% say parents support their rights.
  • 1,552 family members and 375 school staff were trained to understand, recognize and report child abuse.
  • 59 child protection actors, including social workers, police and healthcare providers were trained to identify and report cases of child abuse.
  • 109 development plans were created for families with vulnerable children.
  • 76 schoolteachers and specialists learned positive methods of discipline.
  • 120 teachers were trained in inclusive education to encourage the integration of children with disabilities into schools.
  • 59 different child protection state specialists were trained in child abuse reporting and referring mechanisms, resulting in the creation of a child protection network in the community.
  • 666 parents attended trainings about non-violent parenting approaches.
  • A home visit group was established to mentor parents in non-violent parenting and 70 parents received visits.
  • 32.5% of children aged 8-18 are actively working toward a better future for their community
Youth Empowerment
  • 160 youth had training to help with career decisions, and 131 young people joined clubs that teach community participation and important life skills.
  • 97% of youth now have clear plans for their future.
  • Youth participated in 50 community service learning projects.
  • 38 at-risk youth received vocational education with World Vision’s support.
  • 83% of children show care and concern for others’ needs.
  • Community youth group registered as a foundation and won a $25,000 grant to enhance 5 local schools with more eco-friendly environments.
